What is measured by the test?

Hepatitis A testing looks for specific antibodies to establish whether the hepatitis A virus brings on viral hepatitis. Two types of antibodies are checked for during a hepatitis A test. Several tests can be used to evaluate hepatitis A virus antibodies because antibodies are a component of the body's defense mechanism against viral infection.

IgM anti-HAV antibodies are produced in the body when a person first contracts hepatitis A. Hepatitis A immunoglobulin M (IgM anti-HAV) antibody test. Typically, these antibodies can be found anywhere from two weeks following the onset of symptoms and six months later.
