Red blood cells contain the protein molecule hemoglobin, which is also referred to as HB or HGB. Hemoglobin is in charge of transporting carbon dioxide out of the body's tissues and oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Hemoglobin is composed of four globin chains, which are joined protein molecule structures. Beta chains are uncommon; two alpha chains and two gamma chains make up the majority of the hemoglobin molecule in fetuses and young toddlers. As the baby develops and becomes the adult hemoglobin structure, the gamma chains progressively give place to the beta chains.

The Hemoglobin Test's preparation

Before getting your hemoglobin tested:

There is no need for you to do anything special. A machine will be used to run the test after taking some of your blood. You must keep fasting if the same blood will be used to check other blood counts. If the patient being tested has just received a transfusion, let the doctor know ahead of time. When you go in for the exam, the administration will be simpler if you are wearing sleeveless or short sleeves. Before getting your hemoglobin evaluated, be sure to make an appointment.

Hemoglobin Test Objectives:

  • Usually, the specialist performs the test by drawing blood from a vein.
  • Blood can be taken from an infant's heel using a very little needle (lancet).
  • The upper arm is wrapped in an elastic band (tourniquet) to apply pressure and make the veins bulge with blood before the blood is drawn from the vein.
