Heartland Virus Disease

Heartland virus disease is a tick-borne viral illness caused by the Heartland virus (HRTV), a member of the Phlebovirus genus in the Phenuiviridae family. Heartland virus disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum), which are commonly found in wooded and grassy areas. The virus primarily infects white-tailed deer, but other mammals, including humans, can also be infected.

Symptoms of Heartland virus disease are:

• Fever
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Loss of appetite
• Nausea
• Diarrhea

Some individuals may also experience low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) and low white blood cell counts (leukopenia). In severe cases, it can cause multi-organ dysfunction, including liver and kidney dysfunction. Heartland virus disease can be severe and may require hospitalization, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.

Diagnosis of Heartland virus disease is typically done through blood tests to detect the presence of Heartland virus RNA or antibodies against the virus. There is no specific antiviral treatment for Heartland virus disease, and management is generally supportive, including rest, fluids, and treatment of symptoms. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required for supportive care, such as intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, and other supportive measures.
