Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a rare but severe respiratory illness caused by hantaviruses, which are a group of viruses transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, or through inhalation of airborne virus particles from rodent excretions. HPS was first recognized in the United States in 1993 and has since been reported in several countries, including North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

Hantavirus primarily infects rodents, such as deer mice, white-footed mice, and cotton rats, and humans can become infected when they come into contact with infected rodent excretions or inhale contaminated air particles. HPS usually occurs when people inadvertently inhale Hantavirus particles that are stirred into the air, such as when cleaning or disturbing rodent-infested areas, or when handling or coming into contact with infected rodents.

Symptoms of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome typically start with flu-like symptoms, such as fever, muscle aches, chills, and fatigue. As the disease progresses, it can cause more severe respiratory symptoms, including cough, shortness of breath, and rapid breathing. HPS can progress rapidly and cause severe respiratory distress, leading to respiratory failure and, in some cases, death.
