Group A Streptococcal Infection

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection, also known as Streptococcus pyogenes infection, is an infection caused by the bacterium Group A Streptococcus. GAS is a gram-positive, beta-hemolytic bacterium that can cause a wide range of infections in humans.

GAS infections are typically spread through respiratory droplets from infected individuals, through direct contact with infected skin or wound, or through contaminated surfaces. Risk factors for GAS infection include close contact with infected individuals, poor hygiene practices, compromised immune system, underlying health conditions, and crowded living conditions.

Diagnosis of GAS infection is typically based on clinical evaluation, medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests, such as throat cultures (for suspected strep throat), wound cultures (for suspected skin and soft tissue infections), blood cultures (for suspected bloodstream infections), and other relevant tests based on the site of infection.
