Glucose Tolerance (GTT)

GTT, which stands for Glucose Tolerance Test, is a test that looks at how the body reacts to glucose. In GTT, the patient is given a glucose solution, and blood samples are taken at regular intervals to see how well the body cells can take in glucose from the solution.

Why done? 

When pregnant women get the GTT, it's usually given between the 24th and 28th weeks. People who are pregnant are also given this test. People who have diabetes symptoms or who are at risk of developing diabetes before they get pregnant are also given this test.

Also, the GTT is given to other patients who have a wide range of illnesses that can cause high glucose levels in the bloodstream or make it hard for the body cells to absorb glucose.

GTT is a complex blood test that requires frequent testing and has the following unique requirements:

• Fasting for 8-10 hours before the test is essential, with just water allowed.

• Avoid using the restroom before testing, as urine samples may be required.

• Don't smoke or drink caffeine the day of the test.

• The GTT is not done on unwell people.
