The one-hour glucose tolerance test, generally known as the glucose challenge test, evaluates how your body reacts to sweets (glucose) (glucose). During pregnancy, the glucose challenge test is performed to check for gestational diabetes, a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy.

The test consists of two steps. You take a sweet solution first and blood sugar levels are checked after an hour. The outcomes indicate if you might have gestational diabetes.

Why is it done?

the glucose challenge test is done in pregnancy  to screen for gestational diabetes.

You'll most likely be evaluated between 24 and 28 weeks into your pregnancy, during your second trimester, if your risk of developing gestational diabetes is average.

Risk elements could include:

  • Having or being a person with a body mass index of 30 or higher (obesity).
  • An absence of exercise.
  • Diabetes during a previous pregnancy.
  • Having a medical condition, such as metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovarian syndrome, that is connected to the onset of diabetes.
  • Diabetes in a family member.
  • Formerly giving birth to a child who weighed more over 9 pounds (4.1 kilograms).

Race and ethnicity – Pregnancy-related gestational diabetes is more likely to affect Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian American women.

Most pregnant mothers with gestational diabetes have healthy infants. Gestational diabetes, however, can create pregnancy complications including a serious condition that results in high blood pressure and other symptoms that could endanger the lives of both the mother and the unborn child without careful management (preeclampsia). Also, gestational diabetes raises your chance of giving birth to a kid who is too heavy, which could lead to birth trauma or necessitate a C-section.

Moreover, type 2 diabetes is more likely to strike women who have experienced gestational diabetes.

Results-

Millimoles per litre (mmol/L) or milligrammes per deciliter (mg/dL) are used to express the glucose challenge test results.

Blood sugar levels under 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) are regarded as normal.

A three-hour glucose tolerance test is required to detect gestational diabetes when the blood sugar level ranges from 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) to less than 190 mg/dL (10.6 mmol/L).

Pregnant women with gestational diabetes have blood sugar levels of 190 (10.6 mmol/L) or higher.

For gestational diabetes screening, some clinics or laboratories utilise a lower threshold of 130 mg/dL (7.2 mmol/L).

If you are told you have gestational diabetes, you can avoid problems by carefully controlling your blood sugar levels for the remainder of your pregnancy. America's Obstetricians College
