Glanders is a highly contagious and potentially fatal infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei. It primarily affects horses, donkeys, and mules, but can also infect other animals and humans. Glanders is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated materials, and can also spread through inhalation of contaminated air or ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Symptoms of glanders in animals may include fever, nasal discharge, cough, difficulty breathing, skin lesions, and swelling of the lymph nodes. In humans, glanders can cause fever, chills, muscle aches, and respiratory symptoms such as cough and difficulty breathing. In some cases, glanders can progress to a severe form known as "farcy," which involves the formation of nodules or ulcers on the skin and lymph nodes.

Glanders can be diagnosed through laboratory testing, and treatment usually involves antibiotics, although it can be challenging to treat and is often fatal in horses.
