Galactose Plasma

In Galactosemia, the inability to metabolize galactose (produced from lactose) results in a recessive condition. The affected person inherits the gene (milk sugar). The build-up of galactose can result in feeding difficulties, vomiting, sepsis, diarrhoea, dehydration, and hypoglycaemia in the infant. Cataracts and mental retardation are both progressive conditions.

Why done? 

Galactosemia is an autosomal recessive condition of galactose metabolism that manifests itself most frequently in the new born as poor sucking, vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding diathesis, lethargy, jaundice, and sepsis, among other symptoms.
