What is follicular study ultrasound?

A follicular study ultrasound, also known as follicular monitoring ultrasound, is used to track the development of follicles in a woman's ovaries. Follicular study plays a key role in diagnosis, treatment and management of infertility.

Why done? 

In most cases, follicular scans are advised for the following reasons:

Fasting is not required for follicular study ultrasound. Dress yourself in loose and comfortable clothes to take off easily before the test. Make sure to take any medication that your doctor has prescribed. 

The test usually begins from 9^th-10th day of menstrual cycle. 5-6 sittings may be required for follicular study and monitoring. You may be called on consecutive or alternate days for monitoring.  

What is the procedure for Follicular Study Scan 

A transvaginal ultrasound is the most accurate approach to perform a follicular investigation. You must lie on your back with your legs up and bent during this procedure. 

Your Sonographer will place a condom over the transducer and put lubricant/gel over the condom for the smooth insertion of probe into your vagina and effective transmission of sound waves. These sound waves are reflected and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images. At the end of procedure, tissue paper will be provided to wipe off the gel/lubricant.

After care 

The procedure is usually harmless. However, depending on the size of the probe, you may experience some discomfort. You may be able to resume your daily activities soon after the test.
