Filariasis, also known as lymphatic filariasis, is a parasitic disease caused by filarial worms that primarily affect the lymphatic system, which is a part of the body's immune system. It passes on to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Filariasis is endemic in many tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including parts of Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Central and South America.

As the infection progresses, symptoms can include swelling and thickening of the skin, commonly known as elephantiasis, especially in the limbs (legs, arms, genitals), scrotum, and breasts. Other symptoms may include fever, lymphadenitis (inflammation of the lymph nodes), lymphedema (accumulation of lymphatic fluid causing swelling), and recurrent episodes of acute inflammation (known as acute dermatolymphangioadenitis or ADLA), which can cause pain and disability.

Diagnosis of filariasis is typically done through clinical evaluation, history of exposure in endemic areas, and laboratory tests, such as blood tests, microscopic examination of blood smears, or detection of filarial antigen or DNA in blood samples. Treatment for filariasis usually involves anti-parasitic medications, such as diethylcarbamazine (DEC), ivermectin, or albendazole, which can help kill the worms and reduce the symptoms. In some cases, additional measures may be needed to manage lymphedema and other complications.
