Fasciolasis

Fasciolasis, also known as liver fluke infection, is a parasitic disease caused by the trematode flatworms Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. These parasites primarily infect the liver and bile ducts of various mammals, including humans, and can cause a range of symptoms and complications.

In the acute phase, which typically occurs shortly after infection, symptoms may include fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rash. In the chronic phase, which may develop weeks to months after infection, symptoms may include persistent or recurrent abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), hepatomegaly (enlarged liver), and sometimes respiratory symptoms due to migration of the flukes to the lungs.

Diagnosis of fasciolasis is typically based on clinical evaluation, history of exposure to contaminated water or vegetation, and laboratory tests. These may include blood tests to detect specific antibodies or antigens, imaging studies (such as ultrasound or CT scan) to visualize the liver and bile ducts, and sometimes stool examinations to detect fluke eggs.
