Extrahepatic bile duct cancer, also known as bile duct carcinoma or cholangiocarcinoma. It is an uncommon form of cancer that arises from the cell lining the bile ducts outside the liver. The bile ducts are tubes that carry bile, a fluid produced by the liver, from the liver to the small intestine to aid in digestion.

Extrahepatic bile duct cancer can occur at any point along the bile ducts, from the small ducts within the liver to the larger ducts outside the liver.

It is classified into three main types based on its location:

• Perihilar or hilar cholangiocarcinoma
• Distal cholangiocarcinoma
• Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

Extrahepatic bile duct cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, as it may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. The symptoms include:

• Jaundice
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fatigue or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Pale stools and dark urine
• Itching
• Fever and chills (if there is an associated infection)

Diagnosis of extrahepatic bile duct cancer typically involves a combination of imaging studies, such as computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and/or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), which uses a special dye injected into the bile ducts to visualize the ducts and obtain tissue samples for biopsy.
