Extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) is a ribonucleoprotein (DNA-free protein antigen) extractable from the cell nucleus using phosphate-buffered saline.

The ENA (extractable nuclear antigen) panel is a blood test that looks for antibodies to six or seven different proteins in the body. These antibodies include.

  • * Anti-Ro (also called anti-SSA)
  • * anti-La (also called anti-SSB)
  • * anti-Sm (anti-Smith antibody)
  • * anti-RNP (anti-ribonucleoprotein )
  • * anti-Jo -1
  • * anti-Scl70
  • * anti-centromere

These antibodies are autoantibodies. It is produced by the immune system and targets something that makes up the body's tissues.

ENA panels may be asked to assist in diagnosing the following autoimmune diseases:

  • * Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
  • * Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD)
  • * Sjögren's syndrome
  • * Scleroderma

Qualitative profile

Perform a qualitative extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) profile to detect the presence of one or more autoantibodies in human blood. These autoantibodies react with proteins present in the cell nucleus and cause autoimmune diseases. This test is used to diagnose autoimmune diseases such as mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), lupus (SLE), Sjögren's syndrome, scleroderma, and polymyositis/dermatomyositis. This test also helps monitor the progression of the disease. Signs and symptoms of autoimmune disorders can vary, but the most common symptoms include fever, fatigue, swelling of muscles and joints, hair loss, and hemolytic anemia.
