What Is Estrogen Test?

Estrogen is a primary female sex hormone. As compared to females, males have a lower level of estrogen. Estrogen is a steroidal hormone synthesised from cholesterol, primarily by the ovaries in females and testicles in males. However, estrogen is also produced by extragonadal sites such as adipose tissues and adrenal glands.

Estrogen being a steroid hormone need carrier proteins such as SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) and albumin to get transported to the target sites via circulation. It performs various functions in our body. A highly elevated level or insufficient level of estrogen is an indicator of disease or pathological conditions.

Estrogen blood test is a specific type of test that is used to measure the circulating levels of estrogen in blood.
