Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), Dako Test Cost & Procedure

It is among the viruses that infect individuals most frequently worldwide.

In children, the virus often has no symptoms. From 35 to 50 per cent of the time, it results in infectious mononucleosis, or mono, in adults and adolescents. EBV, also called "the kissing illness," is typically transmitted through saliva. "EBV antibodies" is another name for the EBV test. It is a blood test used to demarcate whether someone has EBV. The examination finds antibodies if they are present.

What is this test?

Your body's immune system produces antibodies, which are proteins, in reaction to a dangerous material known as an antigen. Tests for the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen (EBNA) antibody, Epstein-Barr virus VCA antigen (IgM), and Epstein-Barr virus VCA antigen (IgG) (IgG). EBV brings on infection with mononucleosis (mono). Mono is referred to as the "kissing illness" because it is spread by saliva. Fatigue, a sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes in your neck and armpits, swollen tonsils, headache, skin rash, and a soft, bloated spleen are a few signs and symptoms.

Why is this examination suggested?

The expected duration of symptoms is one to four weeks. However, they can extend up to three to four months. They consist of: fever, a sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes

Procedure:

A blood test is used to detect EBV.

Your doctor's Clinic or an outpatient clinical laboratory will draw blood for the test (or hospital lab).

A vein, typically on the interior of your elbow, yanks blood. The steps involved are :

• Your upper arm is encased in an elastic band, which causes your vein to bulge with blood.
• Your vein is gently poked with a needle to collect blood in a tube or attached vial.
• Early in the illness, very few (or even no) antibodies may be discovered.
• Hence, it could be necessary to repeat the blood test in 10 to 14 days.
