Dobutamine stress Echo (DSE) is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure to evaluate the working of heart under the stressful situation. The test is for the patients who feel uncomfortable or uneasy while performing exercise on the treadmill. To trigger the stress, the patient is given Dobutamine (A cardiac medicine) in the vein of the arm. This injection helps in making the heart beat fast as it's achieved through exercise.

Pre-procedure Preparation

Here is brief information on what you can expect during the dobutamine stress echo test:

• The technician will perform ECG to record the heart’s electrical activities.
• The technician will start intravenous (IV) and give you a dobutamine injection to increase the heart rate.
• After that technician will perform ECG again to record the electrical activities of the heart under stressful conditions. Along with ECG, the technician will monitor the vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and oxygen level.
• At an end, technician will remove the IV line.

The test is completely safe but in some cases, there is a chance of mild headache and drop in blood pressure because of dobutamine injection. Otherwise, this test doesn’t pose any severe side effects.
