CT Coronary angiography is a procedure that uses a special dye to see your heart's blood vessels (how blood flows through the arteries in your heart)

CT (Computed Tomography) Coronary Angiography is an advanced imaging procedure that is used to examine cardiac health and diagnose the underlying issues that occur due to problems in the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply the blood from body parts to the heart. The problem usually occurs in the blood vessels such as narrowing or blockage.  To lighten up the blood vessels, contrast media is given to the patient before conducting the test.

Why CT Coronary Angiography Done?

CT coronary angiography is an advanced technique that helps in detecting a
heart attack before it strikes. It not only diagnoses the heart attack but also the flow of blood in the heart. Doctors recommend this test to detect the narrowed or blocked arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle.

The result of the CT Coronary Angiography aids in deciding the specialized
treatment for the problem.

Doctors recommend this radiology test if you have:

  • Coronary artery disease(symptoms-chest pain)
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Pericardial and myocardial diseases
  • To evaluate ventricular function
  • For treatment of cardiac arrhythmias

In which case Coronary Angiography is not performed?

If you are pregnant and have a chance to become pregnant. If you have an allergic reaction to iodine.

How Does One Prepare For CT Coronary Angiography Test?

Fasting employees don’t drink or eat anything after midnight before the examination. You need to bring the all medical report or any medication you are taking. If you are a diabetic patient you need to ask your doctor if you should take insulin. You will most likely be requested to change the hospital gown.

What Is The Procedure For CT Coronary Angiography?

In this examination you need to lie on your back on the table and arms are placed on the sides then scans are performed. An IV line is inserted in your arm. The electrode is placed on your chest to evaluate your cardiac activity and then dye is injected while performing the scan.

  • Before the procedure of CT Coronary Angiogram, the technologist will give you the medication to slow down the heart rate.
  • After that Technologist will insert an IV into the arm or hand of the patient to give contrast through the IV.
  • The contrast media helps the blood vessels brighten up on the CT images
  • Technologist will place electrodes on the chest of the patient to record the heart rate.
  • For the scanning procedure, the patient will lie still on the examination table that slides to the CT scanner for scanning.
  • Technologist will operate the CT scanner from another room and communicate with the patient through an intercom system.
  • On the completion of the procedure, electrodes will be removed.

Risks

There are some risks involved in the procedure of CT Coronary Angiography:

  • Patients may experience an allergic reaction to the contrast dye.
  • High radiation exposure can increase the risk of cancer development.
