Cryptosporidium is a parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis, which is characterized by frequent, watery diarrhea. Cryptosporidium is the leading cause of water-related diarrhea outbreaks and the third leading cause of diarrhea.

Cryptosporidiosis in human beings is caused by coccidian parasite- Cryptosporidium parvum.

The acute symptoms include the following:

  1. Watery diarrhea
  2. Abdominal cramps
  3. Loss of appetite
  4. Low grade fever
  5. Loss of weight
  6. Nausea and vomiting- lasts for several days to over a month.

Severe, persistent infections can occur in immunocompromised patients. Infection may also be asymptomatic. The parasite has been implicated in several major waterborne outbreaks worldwide.

Why is Cryptosporidium Anti Test done?

In case, you have developed cryptosporidiosis, the symptoms would usually appear 2 to 10 days (on average 7 days) after becoming infected with the parasite.

Feces are the most frequently examined sample while also sometimes small bowel aspirates, or biopsies or even the tissue samples might be available.

Presently, it is seen that the Cryptosporidium would be diagnosed by number of techniques that include- microscopic examination either by one of the following:

  1. Wet mounts of preparation
  2. Staining the smears with the modified acid-fast stain
  3. By fluorescent stains.
  4. The Immunological methods detecting both the antigen and the antibody are also available.
  5. The Histological examination of biopsy and various other molecular methods for detection of DNA are also present.

What is the procedure for Cryptosporidium Anti Test?

The Stool samples are tested for the presence of cryptosporidiosis.

Because detecting Cryptosporidium is difficult, patients may be asked to submit several stool samples over the course of several days.

How is cryptosporidiosis diagnosed?

  1. Cryptosporidiosis is diagnosed with a stool sample.
  2. Your healthcare professional would give you a sterile container and further instructions on how to obtain the sample.
  3. In order to maintain consistency over the detection of the microorganisms in the stool sample, the patient may be asked to submit it over a course of a few days.
  4. Your healthcare professional would also do a physical exam and ask about your symptoms and health history.
  5. People who get infected with the Crypto shed this parasite in their stool while they have the symptoms. It is seen that for around 2 weeks the parasite can be detected even after symptoms have stopped.

Molecular Methods of detection

PCR has been employed for the detection of Cryptosporidium species in the clinical samples, its prevalence in the stool samples are high in India. Generally, the finding of Cryptosporidium by using PCR has sensitivity which is say- between 97% and 100% and its presents with a specificity of 100%.

FAQ

There are many species of the Cryptosporidium that exist infecting humans along with a wide range of animals.

Although the Cryptosporidium parvum and the Cryptosporidium hominis (formerly known as C. parvum anthroponotic genotype or the genotype 1)

They are the most prevalent species that cause diseases in humans, the infections by C. felis, C. meleagridis, C. canis, and C. muris have also been seen.

Most laboratories would also use the microscopic methods for the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis.

Unfortunately, this method also has quite a few limitations as it- would require a minimum threshold of say 50,000 oocysts/ml of the stool sample- for the detection.

Hence, it becomes quite difficult to detect the parasite by the routine microscopy procedure.

The Cryptosporidium oocysts are usually not heat resistant and they can also be destroyed by the conventional milk pasteurization process.

An estimated temperature of greater than 73 °C is likely to cause an instantaneous inactivation.

Cryptosporidium is a microorganism that is responsible in causing diarrhea.

It is found in the stool of the individual infected with Crypto.

The Crypto is said to be protected by the tough outer shell, which also allows it to even survive for more than a period of 7 days.

It is even placed properly in chlorinated pools and in the water playgrounds.

Cryptosporidiosis can consider to be very contagious.

The infected person has the ability to infect others when symptoms begin and it lasts for several weeks even after the symptoms have disappeared.

The Infected people who no longer have symptoms have the potential to still infect others.

It is seen that people with a greater exposure to the contaminated materials are at a higher risk for an infection.

This includes the individuals who are in the following categories:

  1. Children in childcare centers
  2. Diaper-aged children
  3. The Childcare workers
  4. Parents of infected children

Diagnosis

Cryptosporidiosis is generally diagnosed by evaluating a stool specimen for the corresponding parasite.

The complications include the following:

  1. Malnutrition
  2. Growth Delays
  3. Cognitive Impairment.

Most people with healthy immune systems would not require any specific treatment and would recover from the Cryptosporidium infection on its own.

Diarrhea should be properly managed by consumption of plenty of fluids (water) to prevent any dehydration.

Nitazoxanide is the known to be the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat the patients that are aged 1 year or even older with the diarrhea associated with cryptosporidiosis

Understanding the effectiveness of nitazoxanide in immunosuppressed people is highly unclear.

It would be beneficial to contact the health care professional to further discuss treatment options.
