Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a severe viral disease caused by the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), a member of the Nairovirus genus in the family Bunyaviridae. It is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected ticks, or through contact with blood or other bodily fluids of infected animals or humans.
CCHF can cause a wide range of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. The symptoms of CCHF are fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. As the disease progresses, it can cause more severe symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, mood swings, confusion, and in some cases, haemorrhagic manifestations such as bleeding from the gums, nose, or other mucous membranes, as well as bruising and petechiae (small red spots on the skin caused by bleeding under the skin). In severe cases, CCHF can lead to organ failure, shock, and even death.
Diagnosis of CCHF is typically based on clinical symptoms, travel history to endemic areas, and laboratory tests, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and serological assays to detect the virus or antibodies against the virus in blood samples.
