Creatinine is a waste product that is produced by muscles and eliminated from the body through the kidneys. A blood test for creatinine levels can indicate how well the kidneys are functioning. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculation based on creatinine level, age, sex, and race that is used to estimate how well the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood.

The eGFR is calculated using the following formula:

eGFR = 175 x (creatinine level)^-1.154 x (age)^-0.203 x (0.742 if female) x (1.212 if African American)

The eGFR is reported in millilitres per minute per 1.73 square meters (m2) of body surface area. A value of 90 or higher is considered normal, while a value below 60 may indicate kidney disease. However, the eGFR is just an estimate and should be interpreted along with other clinical information.

The eGFR calculation may not be accurate in certain populations, such as pregnant women, people with muscle-wasting diseases, or those with extreme obesity. In these cases, other methods may be used to assess kidney function.

Why is Creatinine With EGFR done?

The Creatinine with eGFR test is done to assess kidney function and to diagnose, monitor, and treat kidney disease. The eGFR provides an estimate of how well the kidneys are filtering waste from the blood, while the creatinine level indicates how much waste is being produced by the body.

The test is often ordered by healthcare providers when a patient has symptoms of kidney disease, such as

  • Fatigue
  • Decreased appetite
  • Swelling in the legs and feet.

 The test is also commonly ordered for patients with diabetes or high blood pressure, as these conditions increase the risk of developing kidney disease. Additionally, the Creatinine with eGFR test may be used to monitor kidney function in patients who have been diagnosed with kidney disease or who are receiving treatment for kidney disease.
