Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Qualitative PCR

Cytomegalovirus, DNA PCR - A qualitative test that uses a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect Cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV is spread from person to person via bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, urine, sperm, and breast milk. A clinician orders this test if a newborn has various congenital abnormalities such as jaundice, anaemia, seizures, developmental issues, or is about to have an organ transplant and is experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Positive results indicate that CMV DNA is found in the sample. In contrast, negative results suggest that CMV DNA is not present or that the quantity of viral DNA copies in the sample is less than the detection limit.
