Cardiac PET CT Scan is a stress test. The main purpose of this test is to check blood flow to the heart.
This test effectively detects coronary artery diseases by showing reduced blood flow. Doctors also advise undergoing this test to know real-time situations for heart blockage.
You will be injected with a radioactive tracer and asked to wait for sometime so that the tracer can accumulate at the targeted area before undergoing the test inside a large tube like a scanner.
Observe Fasting as directed by the Radiologist. Patients are also advised to change to loose gown and remove jewelry items before undergoing the test.
You are instructed to wait for at least 4 hours or until it gets normal. Also, drink a lot of water to flush radioactive material from the body. This test is considered to diagnose any heart conditions such as the coronary artery disease (CAD). The results thus obtained, would allow the doctors to further see the following:
Positron emission tomography (PET) is considered to be the medical imaging procedure that would provide you with the unique information on how the organ or the system in a person’s body is working. The patients who have remained clinically equivocal after the multidisciplinary review of your post-treatment imaging and your clinical exam findings were ordered repeat PET/CT, typically after 1–4 months following patient's initial post-treatment imaging.

Preparation for PET Scan Procedure
You would be required to follow a limited carbohydrate intake diet for previous 24 hours before date of the appointment.
Furthermore, you are requested to not eat or even drink anything, except for water, for at least 6 hours before your exam.
However, as mentioned, you can consume/drink water, also as much water as it would turn out to be helpful, until your arrival.
After PET scan
You can eat and also drink normally. Radiation exposure by radioactive tracer is considered to be very small. Drinking plenty of the fluids after the scan would help you to flush your radiotracer out of the system.
The major drawback to the standard PET would be that images obtained will be of substantially lower resolution in comparison to CT and MRI, while PET is considered generally poor at delineating any anatomic detail.
This test would be ordered by a cardiologist to diagnose any heart problems and this would further show areas in which there would be poor blood flow to your heart.
The Several PET scans might also be taken and considered over time to further determine how well you would be able to respond to your treatment for any heart disease.
Drinking water is encouraged to ensure hydration for best test results. Continue to take your medications as it has been prescribed. If you suffer from diabetes, ask the doctor about any diet and further medication, including any withholding of the insulin for at least 4 hours prior to your exam (with an exception of your insulin pump, which would be permitted).
Day before PET/CT Scan
Avoid caffeine and any de-caffeinated beverages for at least 24 hours prior to the exam. It is also utmost important to stay well hydrated.
