What Is Ultrasound of the Scrotum?

In the Ultrasound of the Scrotum, the sound waves produce images of the male's testicles and the surrounding tissues. This is usually done to detect and evaluate the issues of the scrotum or an underlying medical condition in the testicles and the scrotum of the male patient.

Why Is Scrotal Ultrasound Test Done?

An ultrasound of the Scrotum is used to analyze the following:

  1. To determine whether a cystic or solid mass in the scrotum that can be felt by the patient or by the doctor along with its specific location.
  2. To identify the consequences of scrotal injuries.
  3. An inflammation or torsion followed by testicular pain and swelling.

Uses of the Test Procedure

The Ultrasound imaging of the scrotum is considered to be the primary imaging method used to estimate disorders of testicles, the epididymis (tubes and immediately next to the testicles that collect sperm made by the testicle) along with the scrotum.

  1. Understand and evaluate the causes of infertility for example- in variococele
  2. Understand and locate the location of the undescended testis.

Note: A sudden onset of pain in scrotum should be considered a serious matter. Epididymitis: One of the most common causes of scrotal pain is known to be epididymitis, which is an inflammation of epididymis. It is usually treatable with the use of appropriate antibiotics. If the condition is left untreated, the condition could lead to the formation of abscess or lead to the loss of blood flow to the respective testicles.

Guidelines To Follow Before, During and After the Test

Here are some guidelines an individual can refer to once they have decided to undergo Ultrasound for the Scrotum

The required documents needed for this test includes your valid government ID and an appropriate Doctor’s prescription.

Before the Test

  1. Nothing Specific to prepare for the Ultrasound for the scrotum in advance.
  2. Typically, fasting is not required before the test.
  3. Wear loose- fitting clothing for ease of conducting the test. A hospital gown may be asked to be worn in the hospital premises.

Note: Prescription is mandatory for pregnant female patients with a doctor’s sign, stamp, with DMC/HMC number; as per PC-PNDT Act.

During the Test

  1. You would have to lie on your back with the legs spread apart
  2. A cloth would be draped across your thighs under the scrotum, or some large strips of sticky tape would be applied to the area.
  3. A transparent gel would be applied to the scrotal sac.
  4. This is followed by the use of the transducer to send sound waves to and obtain the clear image of the scrotal sac.
  5. There would usually be no discomfort experienced by the patient, from pressure of the transducer against the examined area
  6. Note: However, it is important to understand, that if the area under examination is tender, you could feel considerable pressure or even minor pain from the transducer machine.

After the test

  1. Once the imaging procedure is completed, the technologist would wipe off the clear ultrasound gel from the skin. Also, any minute portions that remain behind would dry quickly as well. The ultrasound gel will also not stain or discolor the clothing material.

FAQs on Ultrasound Imaging of the Scrotum

What Does the Ultrasound Equipment Look Like?

The Ultrasound machine usually consists of the following components:

  1. Computer console
  2. Video monitor
  3. And an attached transducer

The transducer is defined as a small hand-held device. It usually resembles the look of a microphone. In some other examinations, different transducers (also with different capabilities) may be used in a single exam itself. The transducer usually sends out an inaudible, a high-frequency sound wave into the human body and also listens to the sounds or returning echoes.

It uses the same principles that apply to the sonar used by different boats and submarines underwater.

What Will I Experience During and After the Procedure?

This test is usually completed within the time frame of 15 to 30 minutes, though sometimes even more time would be necessary.

For infants and Babies:

When the babies undergo the examination process. They may cry and experience significant discomfort; however, this must not interfere with the scheduled procedure.

Post-Exam: Once the test is done, the technician would request you to dress back into the normal clothing and wait until the ultrasound images are reviewed.

You can resume your routinely activities immediately after the test.

Is Scrotal Scan Painful?

No. This test is also called as the Testicular Sonogram or the Scrotal Ultrasound. An ultrasound procedure, in general, is a safe and a painless, and a noninvasive procedure. Wherein, a high-frequency sound wave would produce the images of organs inside the body.

Do I Need To Shave for Scrotal Ultrasound?

No, it is not required for the patient to shave for the testicular ultrasound. However, it can be said that shaving the area, could aid in easy accessibility, which would be quite beneficial.

Does Scrotal Ultrasound Show Hernia?

The ultrasound would use the sound waves to generate the images of the pelvic area and the abdomen respectively.

In men- Generally, Ultrasounds would help the doctor to diagnose the inguinal or the scrotal hernias.

What Are the Benefits vs. Risks?

Benefits

  1. Ultrasound scanning is usually considered to be a noninvasive procedure (no needles or/and injections are involved).
  2. Occasionally, it has been seen that an ultrasound exam could be temporarily uncomfortable; however, usually it is not painful.
  3. It is easily available, also quite easy to use; it is also a less expensive option than most of the other imaging methologies.
  4. Safe and without the use of radiation.
  5. A more accurate and clear picture than an x-ray
  6. Real-time imaging. This is beneficial for the minimally invasive procedure for example, the needle biopsies and/or fluid aspiration process.

Risks

The Standard diagnostic ultrasound is known to not have any harmful side effects on people.

What are the limitations of Scrotal Ultrasound Imaging?

  1. It does not always allow an exact diagnosis (i.e. it does depict the exact size and type of what the tissue mass is composed of, for example: In the case of solid mass).
  2. Moreover, the images of blood flow in the testicles would not be a reliable source in determining the presence or the absence of the blood supply to for example, the testicle that has become twisted
  3. Also, while looking for the absent/ missing testicle, the ultrasound might not be able to understand where it located within the abdomen, many a times; the gas-filled bowel would loop and might hinder the view.

How accurate are scrotal ultrasounds?

The Scrotal Ultrasound is a highly accurate and easily available procedure. The Scrotal contents are usually superficial, and enable high-frequency ultrasound:  (US) probes (up to 10 MHz) to distinguish between a variety of the testicular and the extra testicular pathologies present.

Who interprets the results and how do I get them?

  1. You would usually receive your test report on the same day of taking Scrotal Ultrasound Exam at Ganesh Diagnostic and Imagining Center.
  2. After evaluating the results, the doctor would discuss the report with you. This includes your assessment, steps for monitoring the condition or formulating a treatment plan for you.
  3. You would also need to follow-up if necessary, to witness any differences/ potential change in the anomaly in before and after treatment.
