BK Virus Infection

BK virus infection is a viral infection caused by the BK virus, a member of the Polyomavirus family. The BK virus is a common virus that infects humans, and most people are exposed to it during childhood. The virus remains dormant in the body and does not usually cause any symptoms in healthy individuals. However, in people with weakened immune systems, such as those who have undergone organ transplantation or have certain medical conditions, the virus can become active and cause infection.

Symptoms of BK virus infection can vary depending on the site of infection but may include fever, pain or discomfort in the affected organ, urinary symptoms such as increased frequency and urgency, blood in the urine, and changes in kidney function in the case of BKVAN.

Diagnosis of BK virus infection is typically based on clinical symptoms, along with laboratory tests, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which can detect the presence of BK virus DNA in clinical samples, such as blood, urine, or tissue samples. Imaging studies, such as ultrasound or biopsy, may also be performed to evaluate the extent of organ involvement.
