What is Biophysical Manning?

A fetal biophysical manning, also known as Biophysical profile or simply BPP, is a prenatal test used to assess baby's health. The test uses ultrasound and NST to evaluate Fetal heart rate, Fetal movements, Fetal breathing, Fetal tone, and amniotic fluid volume. A scoring system is used and the score is termed as Manning’s score. Each parameter is given a minimum score of 0 and a maximum score of 2, and the maximum total score is 10. Fetal acidemia is declared when the total score is 4 or <4.

In modified BPP (biophysical profile), there are only two components: NST and amniotic fluid index.

What Is the Procedure for Biophysical Manning?

The procedure of BPP includes the following:

1. Ultrasound: You will be asked to lie on the examination table. Your sonographer will apply gel over your abdomen and a transducer/probe will be moved over the abdomen which sends high frequency sound waves to the body parts. These sound waves are reflected back and are recorded by the ultrasound machine and converted into images or graphs. These images will be interpreted by your sonographer to assess your condition.
2. NST (Non stress test): A technician places a belt around your abdomen. This belt has an electronic sensor that measures and records the fetal heart rate. NST usually takes about 20 minutes but it may last longer upto 40 minutes depending upon the fetal conditions.

Aftercare

This is an entirely safe test, with absolutely no risks for the fetus and the expecting mother. You may be able to resume your day-to-day activities soon after this test.
