Bence Jones Protein Test

The Bence Jones Protein (BJ Protein) test is used to determine the presence of the Bence Jones protein in a sample of urine. This protein is especially produced by plasma cells responsible for providing the body with immunity.  

This test is one of several options for detecting myeloma, blood cancer. These are lymphatic cancers. Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell tumor. These cells produce antibodies to help fight infections. MYELOMA cancers are detected in the bone marrow because plasma cells thrive there. Blood cells are generated in the bone marrow. Multiple myeloma takes up space, decreasing normal bone marrow.

The level of BJP protein is significantly higher in persons who have multiple myeloma, which is a specific type of malignancy of the plasma cells.

Why done? 

If you have been experiencing anaemia, a low white blood cell count, a lack of clotting after an injury or cut, or general bone and body weakening, you may be recommended to have this test done. 

Multiple myeloma can cause:

· Anemia: A lack of red blood cells that causes fatigue.

· Thrombocytopenia: A lack of thrombocytes, or blood platelets. 

· Hemopoiesis: The absence of white blood cells. Extreme bleeding or bruising
