Baylisascaris Infection

Baylisascaris infection, also known as Baylisascariasis, is a rare but serious parasitic infection caused by the roundworm Baylisascaris procyonis. This parasite primarily infects raccoons, and infection in humans can occur when individuals accidentally ingest the eggs of the parasite through contaminated soil, water, or food.

Symptoms of Baylisascaris infection can vary depending on the location of the larvae in the body, and may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, as well as fever, fatigue, and muscle or eye pain. In severe cases, Baylisascaris infection can cause more serious symptoms, such as central nervous system (CNS) involvement, including encephalitis, meningitis, and other neurological manifestations.

Diagnosis of Baylisascaris infection may be challenging, as the symptoms can be similar to other conditions. It is typically confirmed through a combination of clinical symptoms, history of exposure to raccoon-infested areas, and laboratory tests, such as serological testing, imaging studies, and examination of biopsy samples for detection of larvae.
