What is being tested? A protein known as apoprotein A-I (apo A-I), which plays precise parts in the transport and metabolism of lipids, is the major protein in high-density lipoprotein (HDL, the "good cholesterol").  The apo A-I level in the blood is determined by this test.

Lipids are like the oil that floats on water; they cannot disintegrate on their own in the blood. To create the lipoprotein particles that can carry lipids throughout the bloodstream, apolipoproteins must be combined with lipids. Apolipoproteins give lipoproteins structural stability and protect the water-repellent (hydrophobic) lipids at their core from external contaminants.

Why Get Tested?

Particularly if you have low grades of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), to estimate your grade of apo A-I and specify your chance of evolving cardiovascular disorder (CVD)

When To Get Tested?

When your doctor is attempting to determine your risk of developing heart disease, while evaluating the success of lipid medication and/or lifestyle adjustments, when you have a low HDL-C value, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels (hyperlipidemia), and/or if there is a family history of CVD.

Is a specimen Necessary?

Blood is taken from a vein in your arm, or after pricking a newborn, from their heel or finger.

Test Preparation Needed?

There is no need to prepare for the test; however, as this test may be run concurrently with a full lipid profile, it may be necessary to fast for at least 12 hours.

When is it ordered?

When an individual has a personal or family past of abnormal lipid grades and/or early CVD, apo A-I may experiment with it. When a physician is trying to figure out why someone has high cholesterol or has a suspicion that it might be brought on by a condition that results in an apo A-I deficiency, they might order it.

What does the test result mean?

Reduced HDL and poor excretion of extra cholesterol from the body are frequently linked to low apoA-I levels. An elevated risk of cardiovascular disease is linked to low levels of apo A-I and high levels of apo B. High apo A-I levels are thought to be protective and can exist independently of HDL levels.
