SS-B (La) IgG Antibody is a blood test used to assess Sjogren's Syndrome and Lupus Erythematosus symptoms and signs (LE). SS-B (La) is a nuclear antigen that can be extracted (ENA). Antibodies against ENA are identified in 60% of individuals with Sjogren Syndrome (a salivary and lacrimal gland autoimmune inflammatory condition), 15% of instances of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and 5-10% of people with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS).

SS-B (La) IgG antibodies coexist with SS-A (Ro) antibodies in patients with Sjogren Syndrome and SLE. Antibodies are detected using the ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) method, the Semi-Quantitative Multiplex Bead Assay, or the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA) approach to diagnose Sjogren Syndrome and SLE. A positive result indicates Sjogren Syndrome and other connective tissue illnesses.

Why done? 

• Evaluating people who have signs and symptoms of a connective tissue illness and whose antinuclear antibody test is positive for antinuclear antibodies
• In patients who do not have evident antinuclear antibodies, testing for SS-B/La antibodies is not beneficial.
