What is the Antibody Screening Test? RBC (red blood cell) antibody screening, often known as antibody screening, is a blood test that detects antibodies against red blood cells (RBCs). Red blood cell antibodies can harm you or your baby following a transfusion. These antibodies can be detected using an RBC antibody screen.

Antibodies are proteins produced by the body to fight viruses and germs. If you are exposed to RBCs that are not your own, you may develop antibodies. This occurs after a blood transfusion or during pregnancy when a mother's blood meets her unborn child's. The immune system mistakenly attacks these red blood cells as "foreign."

Why done? 

• An RBC antibody check is done before each blood transfusion.
• Every woman's pregnancy workup includes an RBC antibody check. It is also done at 28 weeks in Rh-negative women before receiving an injection of Rh immune globulin (RhIg) and after delivery in Rh-positive babies. 
• The RBC antibody screen is sometimes requested to check antibodies in negative pregnant women with known antibodies.
