Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO) is a test that can be used to detect Streptococcus bacteria in the body. It determines the number of antibodies present against streptolysin O, a chemical generated by group A Streptococcus bacteria.
A negative test result during the first few weeks of infection does not automatically rule out the possibility of streptococcal infection later on in the disease. If the doctor believes the patient has an infection, he may recommend undergoing another test after two weeks.
In adults, a value of > 200IU/mL is regarded normal, whereas a value of >100IU/mL is considered normal in children.
You should have this test if you have symptoms like fever, joint discomfort, rashes, or shortness of breath. Rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis (kidney illness), and bacterial endocarditis can all be treated with antibiotics if detected early. However, if symptoms are absent or diagnosed late, problems such as rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis (kidney disease), and bacterial endocarditis can occur (heart inflammation).
You'll have blood extracted from an arm vein.
No preparation is required.
