Anti HBc IgM

A Hepatitis B (Core) IgM antibody or HEPATITIS B CORE ANTIBODY (Anti-HBC) IgM test is used to detect and diagnose hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This test looks for IgM antibodies in your blood and helps to determine if you have currently been infected with the hepatitis B virus. 

HBV has a central core that is surrounded by an envelope. Our immune system produces antibodies against the core during an active infection. This virus commonly infects the liver and can lead to liver damage, scarring, or cirrhosis.

Why done? 

· Your doctor may recommend this test to determine the type of virus causing the infection. 

· If you have any symptoms of hepatitis, such as nausea, dark colored urine, fever, loss of appetite, or if you are suspected of having come into contact with the HBV, this test may be recommended for you.

· This assay can detect acute Hepatitis B infection. It detects acute HBV infection when HBsAg and AntiHBs are negative.
