Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome is a serious condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV attacks the immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which are crucial for the body's ability to fight off infections. Over time, HIV can weaken the immune system, making it more susceptible to infections and cancers. When the immune system becomes severely compromised, the condition is referred to as AIDS.

HIV is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual contact (including vaginal, anal, or oral sex) with an infected person, sharing needles or other injection drug equipment with an infected person. It is transmitted from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth, breastfeeding, or pregnancy. It can also be transmitted through blood transfusions (although this is rare) and in some cases, occupational exposure in healthcare settings.

Symptoms of HIV infection can vary, and some individuals may not experience any symptoms for many years. However, common symptoms may include flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, night sweats, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches. As HIV progresses and the immune system weakens, more severe symptoms may occur, including weight loss, chronic diarrhea, recurrent infections, skin rashes, oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth), and other opportunistic infections.
