AFB CULTURE (Any specimen)

Tuberculosis, generally known as TB, is a severe disease that primarily affects the lungs. Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) is a type of bacteria that causes tuberculosis and other illnesses. AFB tests are frequently ordered for persons with symptoms of active TB. The tests examine for the presence of AFB bacteria in your sputum.  

Why Done? 

• You have a chronic cough, bloody cough, weight loss, fever, chills, and fatigue.

• You have a positive TB skin or blood test and are highly susceptible to infection.

• You have a disease like HIV/AIDS that increases your risk of TB. 

AFB culture test procedure:

The AFB culture test is done on phlegm (sputum) from the lungs. Two days of sputum in a sterile cup, ideally first thing in the morning. Cough deeply multiple times to avoid salivation or postnasal drip.

If you can't cough out enough on your own, a warm sterile saline solution can help. A tube is introduced into the stomach through the nose or mouth to collect the sputum. Gastric aspiration may follow.
