Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), also known as hepatoma, is the type of primary liver cancer. It originates from the hepatocytes, which are the main type of liver cells responsible for carrying out the liver's normal functions. HCC is a serious condition that can be aggressive and may spread to other parts of the liver or other organs.

HCC is often associated with underlying liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, and other chronic liver conditions.
