What is an Ultrasound Eye?

Ultrasound of an eye evaluates the eye and eye orbit for acute vision loss, ocular trauma, headache or increased intracranial pressure. Ocular ultrasonography is most commonly used to measure the orbit length needed to determine the power requirements for corrective intraocular lenses. Additional applications include retinal detachment detection, lens dislocation visualisation, and tumour measurement, including choroidal melanomas.

Why is It Done?

Ultrasound of an eye helps in detecting the problems with the eye. It helps in identifying the disease like:-

  • Tumours or neoplasm involving the eye
  • Foreign substance in the eye
  • Detachment of the retina
  • Also used to monitor and detect the following conditions:-
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Cysts

What is the Procedure for the Eye and Orbit Ultrasound Test?

There are two type of ultrasound scans of eye:

A- Scan

This scan measures the eye that helps in determining the correct lens implant for cataract surgery. It may be used to assess the vision abnormalities of the eyes and other diseases like tumours.

Patient is advised to be straight still and an oiled probe will be placed against the front portion of the eye for scanning. Than radiologist will examine and interpret the result.

B-Scan

It is considered a brightness scan. It is used for producing 2-D cross-section of the eye and its orbit.

B scan is used to evaluate the disease involving the posterior segment and orbit.  Hence B-scan also helps in the diagnosis of tumours, retinal detachment and other conditions.

During the B scan, the patient is advised to sit still with a closed eye. The doctor will evaluate the closed eye while you can move your eyeball in many directions.
