Serum Gastrin

Taking a gastrin test is a way to find out how much of the hormone gastrin is in your blood. Gastrin hormone is made by the G cells in the stomach, and it controls how much acid is produced. Gastrin hormone levels rise when pancreatic tumors are present, but this isn't always true.

A gastrin level that exceeds the normal range indicates increased gastrin hormone production, perhaps caused by Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastrinomas, or G-cell hyperplasia.

Why done?

• 8-12 hours of fasting is required.
