PET CT Scan

A PET-CT is a latest diagnostic test to beat cancer. PET/CT scanner is an ultra fast machine that provides detailed images in a short time keeping patient comfortable.

PET scan is performed on machine which combines PET and CT scanner. This powerful combination provides the images which pinpoint minor changes in the metabolic activity within the body. Hence this modality diagnose more accurately and locate diagnose cancers while increasing patient comfort.

What is PET/CT scan?

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is an advanced imaging technique that is used to produce images of tissues and organs. It is used to analyze the metabolic activities of the tissues in the body.

PET scan can diagnose and assess the severity of a wide range of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and disorders of the brain.

PET scan is used to diagnose health conditions such as cancer (oral cancer, breast cancerlung cancerthyroid cancer, throat cancer,  prostate cancer, and many more); heart problems (Coronary arteries disease, heart attack); brain disorders (epilepsy, brain tumor, Alzheimer, etc.).

For neurologic disorder PET scan used to detect Alzheimer disease, brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia & Parkinson’s disease etc

What Is the Procedure for Pet/CT Scan?

Before the scan, the radiotracer is injected into the patient’s vein. A radiotracer comprises a radioactive isotope and a bio-molecule such as glucose. Later, the patient will be made to wait for 45 – 60 minutes for it to be absorbed by the body cells.

Once the radiotracer is injected, it reaches those regions in the body that utilize glucose.

Tumor cells, for instance, absorb more glucose as they need the energy to divide rapidly. During the imaging, we will be tracking the radioactive emissions by the radioactive isotope that is tagged with glucose. Those areas with increased glucose or radiotracer absorption appear as bright spots.

A special camera is used to detect these radioactive emissions and produce images of the metabolic activity of the scanned region. A CT scan that is carried out simultaneously captures the X-ray images of internal organs from different angles.

A computer then combines the data from PET and CT scans to produce 3-dimensional images of internal organs. Any abnormalities like tumors can be easily and accurately detected through a PET-CT scan.

What Prepration I Need Before Pet/CT Scan?

  • Avoid drinking and eating before 6 hours of scan
  • Refrain yourself from exercising for 24 hours before scan
  • Remove jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses, dentures etc
  • Women should inform their doctor about pregnancy and breast feeding
  • Must inform your doctor about your medical history, medicines you are taking and if you have pacemaker.

What Happens After Pet Scan?

  • You can go to your work when your doctor gives you instructions.
  • Keep away from pregnant and children due to radioactive substance presence in your body. It will remain in your body for few hours to days.
  • Meanwhile, a trained specialist will interpret the PET scan 3-D images and share the information with your doctor. The results are usually ready for your doctor within a few days. Your doctor will go over the results with you at your follow-up appointment.

When Will I Get My Results of Pet Scan?

The radiologist will analyze and interpret the obtained images of the PET/CT scan test. The result will be shared within 48 hours.

If your PET scan result is normal it means there’s no abnormal tracer or carcinogenic activity while abnormal result means there is something harmful which can be infection, cancer or abnormal organ function.
