This test is used in the diagnosis of Hyperammonemia and Hereditary Optic aciduria. The excessive loss of poetic acid may cause many urea cycle infections and defects in arginine metabolism.

Orotic Acid:

This is a constituent of the diet.

Sources of orotic acid:

1. Milk

2. Dairy products

3. Root vegetables such as carrots have a high content of orotic acid.

The formation of pyrimidine is required for the synthesis of orotic acid. Hereditary orotic aciduria: This is an inherited condition in which the body excretes poetic acid excessively. When this is eliminated, the uridine formation is also disturbed, which is used as a part of RNA.

Various symptoms seen in this disorder are:

  • Mental Retardation
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Growth Retardation

Megaloblastic Anaemia Pyrimidine synthesis is a process of formation of pyrimidine. The orotic acid excretion helps in this formation of pyrimidine. This pathway is more active in people who are suffering from urine diseases. Hyperammonemia: This is a condition in which the level of ammonia in our body increases.

Symptoms seen are:

  • Irritability
  • Pain in the stomach
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Change in behavior
  • Speech fumble

Ammonia is the waste substance of the body. The liver excretes this through the urea cycle. If the liver cannot eject ammonia, it will accumulate and cause hyperammonemia.

Causes:

The major causes of Hyperammonemia are the disorders of liver and urea cycle diseases.

Reye's Syndrome is a fatal condition in which the patient's brain is swollen as well, as the liver is poured. This condition is usually seen in viral infection recovery patients.

Symptoms seen are:

  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Epilepsy
  • Headaches

Why is this test used?

This test is used to check levels of orotic acid in patients suffering from hereditary optic aciduria.

Procedure:

  • The urine sample is collected from the patient.
  • It is then rinsed with caution-rich resin.
  • This removes all the amino acids, pigments and urea from urine.
  • After this, it is examined further.
