Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) or Nerve conduction study is a diagnostic test that measures the speed at which electrical impulses travel through nerves in the body.

NCS (Nerve conduction study) is another part of EMG. Most of the time the doctor advises both the tests together- EMG and NCV.

NCV tests provide valuable diagnostic information for a range of neurological conditions, including peripheral neuropathies, carpal tunnel syndrome and radiculopathies.

What is the NCV test?

A NCV test is used to detect nerve damage. It measures how fast an electrical impulse moves through your nerve.

Normally a healthy nerve conducts signals at faster speed than a damaged nerve.

Why is the NCV test necessary?

EMG/NCV tests are the only tests that can evaluate the nerve function in order to determine the abnormality in nerve and muscle. The test will enable the doctor to establish the treatment plan.

How is the NCV test performed?

During NCV test electrodes will be placed on the specific areas on the extremities. A small electrical current is then administered and the resulting electrical activity is recorded. The time which electrical activity takes to travel between the electrodes is measured, and this measurement is used to calculate the nerve conduction velocity.

How to prepare before the NCV test?

Wear comfortable and loose clothes which allow access to the top of your arms and legs or you can change into a hospital gown.

Remove your jewellery before the test

Avoid application of cream, ointment or oil as they may interfere in the NCV test results.

FAQ NCV

Is fasting required for NCV?

No fasting is required before the NCV test. But you have to maintain your body temperature normal. As low body temperature impair the nerve conduction.

Is the NCV test painful?

NCV testing used electric current in small amounts, because of electric shock. Patients may feel some discomfort depending on how the impulse is. Patient will not feel any pain or discomfort after the test is finished.

What is detected by the NCV test?

  • NCV detects nerve damage or disease. But it doesn’t identify the cause of damage.
  • NCV test is used to diagnose a muscular and neuromuscular disorders, including-
  • Trauma
  • Muscle disorders
  • Pinched nerves
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Peripheral nerve injury
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel Syndrome
  • Cubital tunnel Syndrome
  • Sciatic nerve
  • Neuropathy   or nerve damage
  • Charcot-Marie-tooth (CMT) disease
  • Herniated disc
  • Chronic inflammatory polyneuropathy and neuropathy

What are the risk factors of NCV tests?

No risk factors are involved with the NCV testing procedure.

But patent must need to inform your doctor if patient have a cardiac defibrillator, pacemaker or other implanted device

There are some conditions which interfere with NCV results and it includes- damage to spinal cord, severe pain before the test and low body temperature.

How much does the NCV test cost?

NCV test price ranges from INR 1500- INR 5000 depending on area involved.

What is the NCV all limb test?

NCV or nerve conduction test all four limbs used to determine the electrical activity of the nerve impulses. Patients need NCV tests when they have symptoms like- muscles weakness, continuous pain, numbness, tingling sensation in your arms and legs, hands and feets.

Is EMG/NCV the same?

EMG measures the muscles response or nerve stimulation through electrical signals, while NCV measures the speed of electrical signals produced by the nerve.
