MRI sialography is the magnetic resonance imaging study of salivary glands. The technique is a non-invasive, painless and accurate procedure in detecting main ducts and intraglandular branches of the salivary glands.
Salivary gland calculi and salivary duct stenosis can be detected using MRI or MR sialography scans. This procedure does not require cannulation of the salivary duct openings. Also it does not expose the patient to radiation.
The MR sialography scan does not require cannulation of the salivary duct openings; it requires administration of contrast medium. The contrast medium can be iodine based that is water soluble.
