MRI Inner Ear

An MRI of the inner ear makes a picture of the cochlea (a fluid-filled body that looks like a snail shell), the vestibules (ear bones), the auditory nerve (also called the cochlear nerve and the vestibular nerve), and the soft tissues around them.

Why is it done? 

• For diagnosing inner-ear infections (labyrinthitis, ostosyphilis).
• For detecting inner-ear cancer/tumor (intravesicular lipoma, endolymph sac tumor)
• To diagnose inner ear injuries such as otosclerosis (abnormal hardening of ear bones, ear bone hemorrhage).

What is the procedure for the inner ear tomography test?

The MRI radiologist will explain. 

How does one prepare for the test? 

• Notify your technician of any metallic implants such as surgical staples, clips, or pacemakers. You may also need to remove metal objects such as jewelry or metal watches.
• If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.

Aftercare: 

No care is required.
