MRI Brain With Pituitary

A pituitary MRI is an imaging test that creates images of the pituitary gland (a tiny gland in the brain regulating hormones and other glands in the body) and surrounding brain regions.

Why is it done? 

• To find empty Sella syndrome (ESS), a birth defect that causes headaches and vision problems due to high pressure in the brain (CSF).
• To determine the presence of acromegaly, diabetes insipidus, hypothyroidism, and other hormonal disorders.
• Determine the presence of any tumour, cyst, or abnormal mass growth in the pituitary gland or its surrounding area.
• To find out if the Sella or pituitary gland has become hardened.

How does one prepare for the test?

• Tell your technician about surgical staples, clips, or pacemakers. You may need to remove jewellery and watches.
• If you are pregnant, notify your technician, as radiation may harm the baby.
