A kidney panel, also called a renal panel, is a group of measurements that give a wide range of information about the health of the kidneys. This blood test is called a "panel test." It can help with the early detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of kidney problems.

A renal panel test aims to find or rule out possible kidney problems or diseases, which is why it is done. In some cases, it can diagnose, screen for diseases, or keep an eye on things.

The kidneys are responsible for the elimination of waste products from the body and the preservation of the body's water and electrolyte balance. The Kidney Function Test (KFT), often known as the Kidney panel, is a collection of blood tests used to detect how effectively the kidneys are functioning.

Why done?

  • As part of a health check-up.
  • Signs and symptoms of kidney disease can include swelling or puffiness around the eyes, face, and wrists, bloody urine, difficult and painful urination, and more.
  • Suppose you have risk factors for kidney disease, like high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, high cholesterol, or a family history of kidney disease. In that case, you should see your doctor if you have any of these things.

Test Parameters for Kidney Panel

The parameters for Kidney Panel Test are as follows:

Serum Creatinine The Creatinine, which is the waste product produced by muscles, it gets filtered by kidneys. This could indicate impaired kidney function, if the test is positive with accumulation of excess creatinine.
Serum Cholesterol Determines the amount of cholesterol in the blood. The high serum cholesterol level could raise the risk of heart disease.
Serum Uric Acid This determines how much of the uric acid is present in the blood. The test would also determine how well the body would be able to produce and remove uric acid.

Serum Calcium  The Serum calcium is usually measured to screen for or any monitor bone diseases or calcium-regulation disorders
Sodium To monitor for the conditions that affect the balance of fluids, the electrolytes, and the acidity in the body.
Potassium The test is often part of the group of routine blood tests called the electrolyte panel. It could be used in monitoring or diagnosing conditions related to the abnormal potassium levels.
