In Asia, acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) is most frequently attributed to the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Anti-JEV IgM-antibody-capture-enzyme-linked-immunosorbent-assay is the test that the WHO advises (JEV MAC-ELISA). Data, however, indicate that this has a low positive predictive value and that vaccination and other Flavivirus infections can cause false positives. JEV RT-qPCR testing on additional bodily fluids may help with the diagnosis.
