FAQ

The H1N1 test is usually performed to detect the presence of influenza H1N1 virus (or swine flu).

This test is mostly performed using either a throat or nasal swab sample which is collected from the respective patient. This test provides quite an accurate and usually a rapid diagnosis of the swine flu disease.

Swine flu (H1N1) is the infection caused by the (influenza) virus. It's known as swine flu because it is similar to the flu virus that would affect the pigs (swine).

Hence, the name- Swine Flu

i.e. The virus also leads to the lung (respiratory) disease in pigs. While, the Swine flu (H1N1) is seen as the respiratory infection found in humans.

The test is called the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This test may be further used to check and confirm swine flu infection. This test is more sensitive than the other types of tests, i.e. detects even lower levels of virus. It may then be able to find the corresponding flu strain.

Preferred respiratory specimens are as follows:

  1. Nasopharyngeal swab
  2. Nasal aspirate
  3. Combined nasopharyngeal swab with the Oropharyngeal swab.

Note: Incase, these specimens are not collected, a solo nasal swab or an Oropharyngeal swab would also be acceptable.

The variant influenza virus is the following (Major Subtypes):

  1. H1N1
  2. H1N2
  3. H3N2

Humans get infected by pigs through either direct or indirect exposure.

There are recommended measures for the care of patients, who are suspected or confirmed with the H1N1 influenza. These include the following:

  1. Placing patients in the single-patient room
  2. Airborne-infection isolation room which has negative-pressure air handling could also be used, if it is available.

The H1N1 flu vaccines are available today. They are mostly produced in the same way and also by the same set of manufacturers as the seasonal flu vaccine.

This vaccine would not prevent the influenza-i.e. the illnesses which are caused by other viruses; therefore, in this regard, you should get both the seasonal influenza vaccine and subsequently the H1N1 influenza vaccine.

The drugs that are usually indicated for the treatment of H1N1 influenza virus include the following:

  • Neuraminidase inhibitors (i.e., oseltamivir and zanamivir).
  • Oseltamivir and Zanamivir inhibit the enzyme neuraminidase: This is known to be a glycoprotein, which is present on surface of the influenza virus. It usually destroys the infected cell's receptor for the formation of viral Hemagglutinin.

The Patient usually experiences the symptoms start 3 to 5 days after exposure to the virus. On average, it lasts for around 8 days.

H1N1 (Swine Flu) Prevention and Treatment

  1. Covering the nose and mouth with the tissue whenever you cough or you sneeze.
  2. Regular washing of hands
  3. To avoid touching the eyes, nose or the mouth.
  4. Prevent close contact with the sick people

H1N1 is a highly contagious disease, as it spreads quickly from one person to another person. A simple sneeze can transfer the virus – and it spread through the air. The virus could also linger on tables surface and other areas such as  door knobs

Zinc rich foods enhance the immunity of a person. It also ensures a healthy immune system. Adding more zinc to the diet helps fight against the flu infection.

Zinc also helps to repair the body tissues.

Dietary Sources of zinc are as follows: –

  1. Eggs
  2. Meat
  3. Cereals
  4. Garlic
  5. Sesame seeds
  6. Pumpkin seeds

Primary treatment of the swine flu infection is considered to be home management.
The Patients need to further rest, drink plenty of fluids and also use cough syrups or vapor rubs along with inhalations.
For fever along with body ache: Paracetamol (Acetaminophen/Tylenol) or an ibuprofen can be taken.
