As the surface of the conjunctiva is not as smooth as that of the cornea, a little amount of fluorescein pooling may be visible in a normal eye. When the eyelids are everted to inspect the palpebral conjunctiva, a brilliant pink color should be seen.

This occurs when an object, such as a fingernail or sharp twig, strikes or pokes the eye, causing damage to the conjunctiva that may tear or lacerate it. Mild pain and/or a sensation of something in the eye are possible.

Using a sterile swab, a sample is extracted from the eye for diagnostic purposes. To determine if there are any bacteria present, the sample is cultivated in the lab. To determine which antibiotics are effective against the bacteria, sensitivity testing is carried out.

The process of taking a sample from the conjunctiva, the transparent tissue covering the white portion of the eye is known as a conjunctival swab. This process is frequently used to screen for conditions like conjunctivitis or to detect specific eye infections.

The majority of the bacterial growth found in conjunctival specimens was from Staphylococcus species, which was followed in prominence by Pseudomonas species.

Evert the lower lid gently to reveal the conjunctival membrane. Avoid touching the cornea when gently rubbing the swab across the conjunctival membrane. The swab needs to be put back into its plastic sheath and put into the transport medium right away after being collected.

Swabs can be taken for the identification of organisms from the conjunctiva and cornea in a number of circumstances, such as those involving suspected chlamydia or Neisseria gonorrhoea infections, herpesvirus infections of the conjunctiva or cornea, and suspected fungal infections.
