A complement test is a type of blood examination that assesses the protein activity in the serum portion of the blood. Antibodies fight infections and eliminate substances foreign to the body with the aid of the complement system. The body produces antibodies to fight against problems that it perceives as foreign and thus activates the complement system. Autoimmune illnesses fall within this category. This test can track how well autoimmune disease patients are responding to treatment. By monitoring the action of complement proteins in the blood, the test can determine how far along the proteins of various disorders are.

Why is this test recommended?

A blood test for complement determines the concentration or activity of complement proteins. The complement system includes complement proteins. This system comprises a collection of proteins that cooperate with the immune system to recognise and combat pathogens, including viruses and bacteria.

Nine main complement proteins are present. Their numbers range from C1 to C9. You can measure complement proteins separately or collectively. The two complement proteins that are most frequently examined are C3 and C4. The CH50 test, also known as CH100, quantifies the concentration and activity of each main complement protein.

Complement Total (CH 50) Exam Preparation:

  • The test is a typical blood draw test.
  • Any medicine prescribed or not prescribed before the test must be disclosed to the doctor or other healthcare provider.

Complement Total (CH 50) Test Applications:

  • To examine the integrity of the complement pathway in the human body, a natural complement test may be prescribed.
  • Angioedema or inflammation caused by recurring microbial functions may be diagnosed with the test.

Complement Total (CH 50) Test Protocol:

  • Blood must be drawn from the patient's body for the test.
  • The patient's upper arm is secured with an elastic band, and a blood sample is drawn from an arm vein using a needle.
  • The patient can have some minor bruising or throbbing after taking the model.
  • When the syringe is inserted, there may be some skin discomfort.
  • An average CH50 level indicates the existence of all the C1 through C9 components.
  • However, even in the presence of a normal CH50, the absolute levels of specific complement elements (such as C3 or C4) might be significantly (between 50% and 80%) lower thausualal without having an impact on CH50 activity.
