What is the pap smear test?

For the early identification of cancer in women, a pap smear test must be performed. The test is intended to detect abnormal cells in the cervix in order to ascertain the patient's propensity for getting cancer, in addition to screening women for cervical cancer.

How are Pap tests performed?

  • During a pap smear, cells from your cervix are removed and examined for anomalies.
  • Your results are confirmed between five days and two weeks after the test, which only takes ten to twenty minutes.
  • If the test comes out negative, it means that your cervix is free of any abnormal cells, and you can come back in three to five years for another standard pap smear.
  • If the test is positive, more testing could involve procedures like a colonoscopy. However, cell abnormalities are frequently brought on by inflammation, thus they are not always a sign that precancerous cells are developing. Due to the high prevalence of the STD in sexually active individuals, HPV testing is frequently done concurrently with pap smears.

Who requires a Pap test?

Sexual activity raises the risk of cervical cancer, so if you're between the ages of 21 and 30 and sexually active, you should get a pap smear. Cervical cancer must be tested every three years even if it takes 10–20 years to develop.

Preparation for this test:

  • You must wait two days before your pap smear to avoid sexual activity, use of any vaginal cream or spray, douching, and spermicidal foam.
  • Each of these viruses is assigned a number that serves as both its type and identification.
  • One of the most common cancers is caused by this hazardous virus.
  • Precancerous lesions raise the chance of cervix, vulva, vaginal, penis, oral, and throat cancer. Out of the 170 viruses, roughly 40 cause the development of pre-cancerous diseases and are spread via sexual contact.

What signs are present and how can you spot them?

Sexual interaction is the main way that HPV infection spreads. The virus finds a home in the genital regions.

The symptoms can differ from person to person and some people don't appear to suffer any symptoms depending on the virus type that has been affected. The two most typical signs are genital and general warts. Genital warts are a solid sign that someone has HPV. The appearance of genital warts varies. Some just resemble pink skin that is elevated or flat, while others appear to have an overgrowth that resembles a cauliflower. There could be one wart or a lot of them. Others are insignificantly small while others are larger.
